Harold Perrineau, Jr. is an American actor, musician and a songwriter. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Harold studied music and theatre at the prestigious Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. He began his career in the arts as a dancer with the Alvin Ailey Company, performing with the troupe for a year and a half. A gradual shift to acting led Perrineau to the theatre, where he starred in a number of shows including Dreamgirls, the critically acclaimed Avenue X, the off-Broadway revival of Godspell, Peter Sellers’ A Soldier’s Story and Top Dog Under Dog, a play that received the NAACP Theatre Award for Best Ensamble Cast, to name but a few.
Over the years, Harold has collaborated with some of Hollywood’s finest. He played the role of Mercutio alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’, the groundbreaking film version of William Shakespeare’s play, as well as that of Stephen alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins in ‘The Edge’ penned by David Mamet. Harold never shied away from unconventional roles as he brilliantly portrayed Penelope Cruz’ character’s cross-dressing childhood friend Monica Jones in ‘Woman on Top’. Harold recently wrapped up Roger Donaldson’s latest feature, ‘The Hungry Rabbit Jumps’, alongside Nicolas Cage, January Jones and Guy Pearce. The film is slated for summer 2010 release.
Although having stared in almost 20 films, Harold is mostly renowned for his roles of Michael Dawson in the cult television series ‘Lost’, Link in the ‘Matrix’ film saga and video games, as well as the unforgettable narrator Augustus Hill in the television series ‘Oz’ – a character of such impact on popular culture that Harold was asked to make an appearance as Augustus on Saturday Night Live. He also made an appearance in the star-studded music video ‘Yes We Can’ produced by Will.I.Am for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. In April 2010, Harold reappeared on ‘Lost’ and guest stared on ‘CSI: NY’.
Harold’s various and versatile roles, as well as his unique portrayal of the characters he brings to both the screen and the stage have earned him critical praise and an enviable fan base. In December 2007, Harold originated the idea and co-wrote the song ‘Stay Strong’ as a thank you card to the troops and their service to the country. It was a labor of love, and everyone involved in the making of the video volunteered their, including its director, Daniel Dae Kim. Proceeds from CD and video sale were donated to the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain injury.
Since ‘Stay Strong’, Harold has been working tirelessly on his other passion – music and is actively collaborating with music producer Tomo J. in der Muhlen on his soon to be released debut album ‘Seeker’, which will reflect the level of creativity Harold has always pursued in his acting career. Harold’s music can be described as organic – every sound on the record is recorded live from live and even vintage instruments, with no artificial and digitally produced sound. Jadakiss, Kurtis Blow and Vernon Reid will be guest staring on the album so keep your ears opened!
Having his creative roots on the stage, what Harold enjoys the most is doing live shows where he performs with a full band: two guitars, bass, drums and keyboards. The packed gig at the cult Los Angeles club ‘The Mint’ in April showcased Harold’s full performance potential and was featured on myjet247.com. In June, he blew the sports fans away with his performance of the National Anthem and God Bless America at the Dodgers Stadium. Harold is ready to take on the stage this July 24 at the stunning Universal City Walk open-air stage…
